Alchemy

Living in Ashenport was boring most days, and downright tragic on others. That wasn’t the fault of anyone in particular, but the on and off bans on pretty much anything that Lady Machelle felt drew too close to anything that could be considered ‘evil’ was definitely a main factor. And when there were only three people in the town that actually dabbled anything inherently magical, it felt a little targeted.

There were few things in life that Zane actually cared about, and magic revolved around at least seventy-five percent of them. Merrin took up another portion, and Tal made up the rest. Zane wasn’t a ‘people person’ in the slightest, so the less interaction he had with literally anyone, the better.

Which was why he had decided to help Madame Rosevin at her shop. The alchemist had been trying to recruit Zane as her apprentice since he was twelve. But that was quickly shut down by quite literally every other adult in Ashenport because of how dangerous and reckless it was. It was understandable, Zane supposed. He’d spent the majority of his childhood either too sick to do anything, or pushing his body to its absolute limits because he felt the slightest bit better. So, suddenly becoming an alchemist’s apprentice wasn’t the greatest idea.

But as soon as he turned sixteen, no one could convince him to do anything else. It wasn’t like anyone else actually cared about him doing magic, they were just worried about what his father would do.

It was supposed to be a decent job. He would get to work on experiments that were seemingly ‘below’ Madame Rosevin, or do tasks that she didn’t want to do, but due to the constantly changing decision over what was banned, Zane felt like he spent more time arguing with the town guards than actually working.
