Bruises

Orlia sat on the floor in front of her fireplace. The rug she was on was littered with various sketches of flowers she’d been picking the night before. She had a pan of paints in front of her, and she was busy trying to mix up the perfect shade of red for the carnations.

It was the first night off she’d had in weeks, and she was choosing to spend it alone. As much as she loved the boys, there was only so much drinking and stupid stunts she could put up with. Not to mention the fact that she’d rather rip her own hair out than have to listen to Danny’s poorly made up stories for even another hour of her life.

But for now she was content with her cup of elderflower tea and the lavender shortbread biscuits Clovara had brought to the guard’s barracks.

Having a calm night was just the thing she needed, but she wouldn’t lie and say that she didn’t miss having the company of something else. Maybe she’d finally get herself a pet, but it wasn’t like she could just buy one from somewhere. She didn’t have the money for that, and it wasn’t like anyone sold animals other than livestock
