Resurrect

Merrin brushed a hair from Zane’s forehead and watched as his breathing began to come out in short, sputtered gasps. It didn’t matter how many times Merrin had watched the life slowly drain from Zane’s eyes, it never failed to hurt. He always tried to be there for Zane when it happened because the last thing he wanted was for Zane to die alone. They were all each other had, and Merrin needed to make sure that Zane knew he was never going to be alone.

‘It’s okay,’ Merrin said quietly and laced his fingers between Zanes. ‘You’ll be okay.’

Zane gave him one last weak smile, and he choked out his final breath.

Merrin ran a hand over Zane’s eyes to close them and mentally prepared himself for what he had to do.

There was no way he was going to let Zane just die, especially when it was his fault Zane was dead again so soon. He hadn’t used enough blood to give enough lifeforce to please Demmos despite practically bleeding himself dry. But Merrin was prepared this time, he wasn’t about to make the same mistake again.

Merrin had seen that Zane was slowly dying, it wasn’t a difficult thing to miss. Over the past few days Zane had gradually gotten paler and paler. Blood almost constantly dripped from his nose and eyes, and more than once Merrin had caught him coughing up blood.

So, Merrin had spent the last few days setting everything up to make sure that he could get Zane back as fast as he could without fucking everything up. It had led to some interesting conversations as he tried to explain to Orlia why he was eating significantly more than he usually did. It had left him feeling far more energized than normal, and it did make him consider doing it more often.

But that wasn’t the only thing he’d prepared.

He’d gotten enough spare blood and organs to replace the ones that might’ve failed since Zane’s last check-up.
