Glass

Zane sat on the floor of the basement and looked up at the decorative corners that had been built into the walls. The two that were either side of the entrance to the altar room were designated to Merrin and himself.

It was something that their mother had started many years ago when they were only five, but at that point they were just small alcoves that she could put the various sketches of them she’d done. Then in the years that followed she began to stock them up with a few more things.

The first thing she added was their first pieces of writing. Granted, neither of them were very legible, but it was funny to see that Merrin’s wasn’t actually that different now than it was when he was five. In fact, Zane would argue that it was better back then, much to Merrin’s displeasure.

The second thing she added was a candle they all made together, well, not with their dad, but not of them exactly cared about that anymore. They weren’t very good candles, and Zane was fairly sure that they would’ve been a huge fire hazard if they actually lit them for once.

But Zane’s favourite thing about the alcoves wasn’t anything that his mother added. No, it wasn’t even something that was added when she was still at The Clocktower. It was added by Merrin just a few years before as a surprise. He hadn’t even told Zane that it was there, he just installed it and waited for him to notice.

Which was to say that he noticed it the same afternoon.

His favourite part of the alcove was a small piece of stained glass that Merrin had made from pieces of sea glass he’d found whilst at work – and most likely some glass that wasn’t from the sea and was in fact from one of the dozens of crates he handled throughout the day.

It was made into the shape of a human heart, but it wasn’t just any heart…
