Merrin supposed it was down to the incredibly strong painkillers that Merrin had laced his blood with before he pumped it into Zane’s veins. It was a neat little trick that he’d thought of doing last time that he had to borrow some bones from a traveller without having to hear them complain too much.
But Merrin knew that it wouldn’t last for much longer, and as soon as it wore off Zane would be screaming in pain considering just how many repairs Merrin had to do this time. Unfortunately, Merrin had used all of the prepared mixture, so he’d have to go back upstairs in order to mix some more.

As it turned out, blood magic was a very powerful thing indeed, and Merrin could hide just about anything he wanted from anyone that didn’t have his blood. Of course that meant sometimes Zane could see things and other times he couldn’t, but Merrin was never too worried about that, especially since Zane didn’t mind not being able to see the odd door or cache that Merrin hid from unwanted visitors.
But it never hurt to be too safe…
